Goodbye Spain

The King and the Spanish Anthem were drowned out by monumental whistling at the 2009 Cup Final between Barça and Athletic Bilbao (won by Barcelona 4-1). Spanish nationalist TVE censored the sound and images.

Fascist Franco’s Spanish anthem lost its voice with democracy in 1979 when singing “raise your hands and march in step with Spanish fascism” could no longer be imposed. Thirty years later Catalans and Basques still do not accept the neofascist anthem of Spanish nationalists

Not halfhearted, not a minority and not hideable. The show of rejection against the two symbols defining Spain were too obvious. In the stands the majority was Basque, not Catalan, 70 to 30, but the unanimity in whistling spectacular. Much bigger than at the entrance of the same king and anthem at the Athletics World Cup in Montjuic Olympic Stadium in 1989 and comparable to 1925 in Les Corts during the Primo de Rivera dictatorship, which led to the government closure of the Barcelona football stadium for six months. Yesterday the authorities knew very well what to expect. Supervised by the Central Operations Unit of the Guardia Civil, the Spanish Football Federation responsible for television images also controlled the stadium loudspeakers. Their exaggerated volume when the Spanish anthem was playing would have overwhelmed any other event. Not yesterday. The best proof was the reaction of TVE. The anthem did not last more than 2 seconds live breaking to an unprecedented- with the king at attention and the anthem playing- external connection with Bilbao San Mames stadium where Basque followers watched the match on giant screens: there was no escape from transmitting the whistling because those Basque supporters also roared their displeasure. In Valencia there were 40,000 Bilbao and 25,000 Barça supporters. The Basques sang “Jump, jump, jump, a Spaniard who doesn’t jump” or “Who’s burning? Madrid burns”. TVE never showed on screen the big banner in a zone shared by Basque and Catalan supporters which read: “We are nations of Europe. Good bye Spain”. They also missed an even better known one. The unrest in other Spains would have been even greater had they seen again the famous “Catalonia is not Spain.” Catalan Nationalist Youth JNC members were stopped by police officers. In fact half a dozen arrested and 5,000 fliers on independence seized which they wanted to hand out to the spectators. The fliers said: “Catalonia is not Spain”. The consolation remains that Barcelona player Gerard Pique greeted the king…holding a starred independence flag.

La cridòria apaga l’himne espanyol mentre la reina Sofia esforça un somriure i el borbó no pot. Batuda la megafonia, TVE renuncia a monarca i música i tira de connexió externa. El Barça guanya la copa 2009 contra el Bilbao, 4-1.

L’himne espanyol del feixista Franco va perdre la veu el 1979 amb la democràcia que ja no podia exigir cantar “alzad los brazos, los yunques y las ruedas marchan al compàs.” Trenta anys després catalans i bascos segueixen sense acceptar l’himne neofeixista dels espanyolistes.

Ni tímida, ni minoritària, ni dissimulable ni molt menys amagable. La mostra de rebuig contra dos símbols definitoris d’Espanya va ser evident. A la grada hi havia majoria basca, 70 a 30, però la unanimitat xiuladora va ser espectacular. Molt superior a l’entrada dels mateixos rei i himne a l’Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc la inauguració el 1989 de la Copa del Món d’Atletisme, i comparable al 1925 a les Corts en plena dictadura de Primo de Rivera, que va acabar amb clausura governativa de l’estadi blaugrana per sis mesos. Ahir bé prou que sabien que això es podia produir. Amb la supervisió de l’unitat central operativa de la Guàrdia Civil, la Federació Espanyola de Futbol era responsable de la retransmissió, però també de la taula de control de la megafonia de l’estadi. L’exagerat volum en sonar l’himne espanyol l’hauria fet eixordador en qualsevol altra situació. No ahir. La millor prova de la contundència de la situació va ser la reacció de TVE. Ni dos segons d’himne van aguantar en antena, per donar pas a una inèdita –perquè el rei era dempeus i sonava l’himne– connexió exterior, en aquest cas amb San Mamés on els seguidors bascos seguien el partit en pantalles gegants: ni així han evitat retransmetre una xiulada, perquè el públic de Bilbao també s’hi ha esgargamellat. A València hi eren uns 40.000 seguidors del Bilbao i uns 25.000 del Barça. Els blanc-i-rojos cantaven “Boti, boti, boti, espanyol qui no boti” o “Quién se quema? Se quema Madrid”. TVE no va oferir cap pla de la gran pancarta desplegada en zona compartida per les aficions basca i catalana, en què es llegia: “We are nations of Europe. Good bye Spain”. I se’ls en va escapar una altra de més coneguda. Perquè l’esverament a les Espanyes hauria estat encara més gros si arriben a retrobar-se amb la famosa “Catalonia is not Spain.” Militants de la JNC van ser interceptats per agents de policia. De fet, detinguts –mitja dotzena i requisats 5.000 cartells independentistes que pretenien repartir entre els espectadors. Als cartells hi deia: “Catalonia is not Spain”. Sempre queda el consol que el futbolista Gerard Piqué va saludar el rei… estelada en mà.
